Comparison of AOD refining and VOD refining
Judging from the use of AOD and VOD methods, more factories have chosen AOD. Although the AOD method is smelted under non-vacuum, it is free to operate, can be directly observed, convenient for slagging and sampling, and has strong adaptability to raw materials. It can reduce the sulfur content in steel to a very low level. The productivity is higher than that of the VOD method. Realize computer automatic control.

However, compared with the VOD method, there are many shortcomings. First, in the reduction period of the AOD method smelting, 15-20Kg/t of ferrosilicon is added to reduce the chromium in the slag, and lime is added to adjust the slag. This will inevitably lead to an increase in the hydrogen content in the steel, and a tapping is required after refining, which increases the contamination of the molten steel with air, which will undoubtedly affect the refining effect. Especially when smelting ultra-pure ferritic stainless steel that is resistant to pitting and stress corrosion, the VOD method shows its unique advantages, and it can produce ultra-low nitrogen stainless steel with [C] + [N] <0.02%. Secondly, the AOD method  has no versatility and can only be used to smelt stainless steel, while the VOD method has versatility as a degassing device and can be applied to various steel grades.
