CaF2 itself does not have the
desulfurization effect; the main function is to reduce the melting point of the
desulfurization slag and improve the fluidity of the desulfurization slag; CaF2 and CaO form a series of low melting point eutectics to help melt the slag.
With the progress of the desulfurization reaction, a solid phase of CaS will be formed at the slag-steel interface, and the presence of a solid phase of CaS prevents the
desulfurization reaction from proceeding and reduces the amount of liquid phase.
Adding CaF2 to the slag is beneficial to the destruction of the solid phase, increasing the amount of liquid phase and improving the desulfurization conditions.
However, when the content of CaF2 in the slag is sufficient to prevent the formation of CaS solids, continuing to increase CaF2 will cause the CaO in the slag to be diluted and reduce the effective CaO concentration, which is not conducive to desulfurization.
