VOD is the abbreviation of Vacuum Oxygen Decartmrization (Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization) method, also known as Witten method, was invented by West De Witten Company in 1976 based on the theory of vacuum decarburization. Oxygen is blown into the top of the molten steel in the vacuum tank for decarburization, and argon is blown from the bottom of the ladle to promote the circulation of the molten steel to supplement the need for decarburization near the nozzle and prevent local oxidation of chromium.

This method is currently being widely promoted as a stainless steel decarburization method.

The principle of the VOD method is to fully reduce the partial pressure of carbon monoxide in the gas phase in contact with the molten steel (reducing the partial pressure in the vacuum chamber through the vacuum system) to prevent chromium oxidation loss, and at the same time ensure that the molten steel is decarburized to the required requirements.

The combination of the VOD method and the converter is called the LD-Vac method, and the combination of the electric furnace becomes the ELO-Vac method. The treatment process is roughly as follows: after removing the slag of the molten steel melted in the converter or electric furnace, pour it into the ladle, put the ladle into the vacuum tank and cover the lid, and blow argon gas from the porous brick at the bottom of the ladle. Stir the molten steel in the ladle; At the same time, the vacuum system is activated. When the required vacuum is reached, oxygen is blown in from the oxygen lance set on the cover to perform vacuum decarburization to C <0.07%, and ferroalloy is added for vacuum degassing, The whole process ends.

The VOD equipment is roughly the same as the ladle degassing method. The difference is that the oxygen blowing pipe can be lifted and lowered freely at the upper lid of the vacuum tank, and oxygen is blown into the molten steel in the vacuum tank for decarburization, and a large amount of carbon monoxide gas is generated. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the exhaust function.
